Canadian National Exhibition, Day Two

soldiers

Another glorious day at the CNE.

As the daughter of a veteran, the Warrior’s Day Parade is a must for me every year. This year I was happy to see veterans from even more countries. I also saw the Toronto Police War Veterans for the first time. They are double heroes in my opinion. The vets seemed to be having a wonderful time. They really seemed to appreciate the warm reception they received from the grateful crowds.

Once the parade was over I headed to the food building to find the potatoes in a cone I mentioned yesterday. Boy was I wrong about that! The cones I saw were actually soft ice, next to a potato chip booth. You can see from the photo why I might have been confused.

Ice Cream

The sun was coming out, so it seemed to be the perfect time to see the Cruise Nationals Classic Car Show. Wow! I have never seen so many gorgeous vehicles in one place. It really was a walk down memory lane. I saw the model of car my parents had when I was a little girl, the car a friend drove in the 70’s and my grandfather’s Chevy, in exactly the same two-tone baby blue and white. The location was perfect. Strolling down the lanes, under the beautiful trees made it a very pleasant place to be.

Pretty soon the aroma of barbeque started wafting over the fence. It was lunch time and the ribs were calling me. I checked out all the offerings. For some strange reason, everyone was lined up at one booth. The other booths were completely empty. Not sure why. Being one to buck a trend, I headed to the other end of the row and visited the Crazy Canuck booth. Eating their delicious chicken and southern style potatoes under the trees was one of the highlights of my day.

Heading out from Bandshell Park I ran into the living statue. He looks like he came right off the top of the Princes’ Gate. In another one of those magic Ex moments, an orthodox priest walked by, just as the statue was taking his place. The priest smiled and said, “Oh, an urban angel.” The statue this year was terrific. He really surprised a few kids when he moved while they were posing with him. He will be outside the Queen Elizabeth Building every 25 minutes, starting at 12, every day. I am going to make sure I catch him again.

I did a quick pass through the kiddie section on my way home. The bright colours of the rides are a natural draw for a shutterbug like me. I must head back there one morning when the light is still in the east.

Day two, I have been there for two solid days and I haven’t even scratched the surface. Tomorrow, 50 Years of Motown.
