A Short Visit to the Ex…

Mardi Gras Parade 1

A Short Visit to the Ex…

I decided to go to the Ex today but I had no plan in mind.  I am normally a compulsive planner and more so when I have my family with me.  This time I was alone so I decided to just wing it.

First stop, the Cooking Stage.  Short but sweet show, best part, you get to taste the food that was just prepared.   The next best part, fill in a ballot and you get a bottle of cooking sauce from Patak’s – who does not like a freebie??

Next I decide to walk around and take in the crowds, all the time forgetting it was time for the Mardi Gras Parade which occurs every evening at 6:00 p.m.  I was at one of the booths when I heard the band and immediately, everyone took their place on the sidewalk to watch with smiles on their faces and hands ready to catch the beads.  The kids were jumping as high as they could trying to outdo one another. Not to be left out, the adults got in on it as well.  Many kids were then running through the Food Building to get to the other side to catch more beads. How do I know this?? I found myself following them, with excitement and camera in hand.

Deep-Fried Dilemma

Deep-Friend Dilemma

I’m not sure where our obsession with deep frying came from, but I suspect it has something to do with the fact that you’re pretty much guaranteed something delicious once it’s been coated and plunged into hot oil. You’ve likely heard about the plethora of deep fried items at this year’s CNE and it seems that each year the various vendors try to outdo the ones before. It started with a pogo and now even that seems pale in comparison to this year’s offerings. Here are a couple of highlights:

The Mac & Cheesery offers a number of different mac and cheese options ranging from the traditional to a bacon-cheeseburger option. But they’re not done yet; they take that already highly indulgent comfort food and throw it in the fryer. Creamy squares of macaroni and cheese are coated in breadcrumbs and then deep fried giving it a crispy coating with a soft and cheesy centre; definitely worth trying out.

Sliding over to the sweet, the much-hyped deep fried cola and cherry-aid live up to their expectation, but might not be served up as you expected. Deep fried cola starts with a sweet batter that has a cola base, imagine your fish and chip batter, but made with cola instead of beer. The cola-based batter is drizzled into the hot oil and a few minutes later you have golden-brown, puffy strands of cola batter. Before you get it in your hands they hit it with cola syrup, whipped cream and a cherry on top.

Similar to the cola, the deep fried cherry-aid sends bright red balls of cherry-aid based dough into the fryer that come out as golden donut holes with a vibrant ruby red centre. They get a quick shot of syrup, giving it a tart cherry taste that cuts through the delicious sugary batter.

All these deep fried festival favourites are well worth a trip down to Ex and there are loads of other menu items waiting to be discovered. And if you’re hesitant about your waistline, remember the Ex comes but once a year!

A Look Back

Grandfather and Grandson on Ride

On a late summer afternoon in 1957, a young family walked from Palmerston Avenue in Little Italy, west on Queen Street, down Strachan, and through the grand Princes’ Gates of Exhibition Place. It was an important moment for this young family – they were recent immigrants to Canada and as much as they wanted to explore their new city, money was tight, so leisure time was spent in neighbourhood parks.

But on this occasion, the father of the family decided to take his family to the Canadian National Exhibition. The twenty-five cent admission fee was steep, but he hoped that the special day would become a meaningful memory for his three children.

One of those young children was my father, and 54 years later, he remembers those first steps through the Princes’ Gates. He also recalls his mother’s homemade picnic lunch, his sisters’ anticipation and the incredible crowd of people. The family excitedly explored the grounds, seeing things that they had never seen before.  They came from a small mountain village in Italy, and now they were in the big city and the CNE was a showcase for all things modern; spectacular midway rides, raucous musical parades, fancy home appliances in the Better Living Centre, and all those shiny cars in the Automotive Building.

Fast forward to present day, well actually last Saturday, and my father carried on the family tradition. This time, taking his own family to the CNE, with his little grandson in tow.  We all walked from Fleet Street, down Strachan, and entered through the Princes’ Gates entrance. Too excited to stop for a photo, my father and son zipped through the ticket lines, skipped the buildings, and headed straight for the Kiddie Midway. This was the place where little grandson was happiest (especially on the Train Station ride), and hopefully the place where a few childhood memories would be made.

So tell me, what is your family’s CNE story?

P.S.  You might ask why I’m telling this story, when I could be writing about all of the spectacular stuff happening this 133rd year of the CNE (i.e. fantastic music concerts, fried everything, kitty cat shows, wild flying midway rides, and so on).  But, when I started to think about potential topics for my first blog post, I began to wonder about my family’s very first entry in to the fair. Only since being a CNE blogger, have I taken the time to ask my father why he loves the CNE so much.  And well, now I know.

Chef Demo Delights

Chef Demo Delights

It’s not every day that I get to see my favourite Food Network celebrities live in action. This year at The Ex, Food Network’s finest culinary superstars are being featured daily doing a demonstration in the Direct Energy Centre at 2:00 pm. and 5:00 pm.  So far I’ve been fortunate enough to see Top Chef Canada winner, Chef Dale MacKay, and Top Chef Canada competitor, Chef Rob Rossi.

Both Chefs shared useful food and cooking tips and did a fantastic job interacting with the audience and answering peoples’ questions. Chef Dale brought a family dynamic to his chef demonstration by inviting his son, Ayden, to join him as a sous chef.  And Chef Rob Rossi shared that he will be opening a restaurant at College and Dovercourt in late November – I can’t wait to go to it so I can try his flavourful dishes!

If you haven’t gone to a demo, there are plenty more to come! Last year, I missed going to see my favourite food man, Chef Michael Smith at The Ex. Lucky for me he is back again this year on Saturday August 27, AND for the bakers out there…Duff Goldman from Ace of Cakes will be at The CNE on Friday September 2.

For those of you who care more about the taste of food products rather than watching them be made, check out my next blog!

Entertainment Beyond the Stage

Tree of Life and Showbot

The CNE is packed full of big events and entertainment on several stages throughout the Exhibition grounds.  Many of these shows are well advertised and well attended.  But what about the entertainment that isn’t on stage?

Did you know there are some entertainers who wander?  There are two very cool wandering exhibits I stumbled upon.  At and around the Princess Margaret Fountain there are two wandering exhibits that you can enjoy:  the Tree of Life and Showbot.

The Tree of Life is a larger-than-life animated tree.  With slow and fluid movement, the Tree of Life captures the attention of those around.  After the initial awe and astonishment, the delighted crowd moves in to examine the finely-crafted details of this other-worldly forest giant.  Soon after, observers become active participants and take the opportunity to have their photo taken with the Tree of Life.

Showbot is a cheeky blue robot that zips around making conversation with anyone who stops to take a second look.  Showbot’s quick wit is sure to entertain.  I witnessed one woman challenge Showbot to dance with her.  After a few moments, Showbot started to play “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” and asked her to dance.  The music switched to something up-beat and Showbot proceeded to rock out with the crowd.

As you plan your day at the CNE, don’t forget to keep your eyes open for entertainment beyond the big stages.  You will be excited to find these unique performances!

A pleasant and unexpected treat at the International Stage

JorgeMiguel

With all of the great events each day, planning your visit to the CNE can be overwhelming.  It is helpful to plan with the daily CNE schedules, but on occasion, the programming can change without notice.

This was the case at the Transat Holidays International Stage on opening day.  As the crew started setting the stage, it became apparent that the act I was expecting to see wasn’t going to be performing.  I had to make a choice, leave and rush to something else on my schedule, or stay and discover what the performance would be.

Luckily, I decided to stay.  Had I left, I would never have discovered an amazing flamenco ensemble.  Jorge Miguel was not scheduled to perform at the CNE this year.  His ensemble was a last minute fill-in.

For the next 30 minutes I was entertained by beautiful flamenco vocals, rhythms, beats, and dance. They ended their set to a standing ovation!

After the show I spoke with Jorge Miguel about his ensemble and performance.  When asked why he assembled his group to perform at the CNE on such short notice (due to a last minute schedule change), he said “Because I love the CNE.”

Most recently, Jorge Miguel and his Ensemble performed at the Taste of the Danforth.  They are currently scheduled to tour western Canada playing 22 cities.

FLOWRIDER Splash Zone

FLOWRIDER Splash Zone

FLOWRIDER Splash Zone

The CNE always marks the end of a summer and oh what a hot summer it has been! All over the city, people have been finding ways to stay cool and Sprite has been no exception. This summer, the Sprite Splash Mob has taken to some of the season’s biggest and best events and has been making waves with our larger than life stunts. At Wakestock in Collingwood, crowds drew to the skim board track.  At Osheaga, Sprite fans tested their balancing skills on our Log Splash – a rotating log above 4 feet of water. Earlier this summer, fans reached new heights on our Euro Bungee Splash – trampoline stations that allowed you to do fun tricks in the air while getting cooled off.

This year at the CNE the Sprite Splash Mob presents the Flowrider. The Flowrider will allow you to test your surfing abilities on a manmade wave, in the heart of the CNE! Surfing skills not up to par? The Flowrider Splash Zone will also feature beach volleyball and a basketball court. In addition there will be live music at free bonus casino and seating to watch the Flowrider and of course complimentary cold, refreshing Sprite. There are tons of prizes to be won including free Flowrider rides every hour! Got to beat the heat? Be sure to check out the Sprite Splash Mob’s Flowrider.

The Flowrider will be open August 19th – September 5th. Admission to the Flowrider Zone is free and $20 for a half hour session on the Flowrider. See you there!
